Vivian's Story

Vivian Laine is alive today because of BabyNoChoke.

Every parent has had the sinking feeling when they see or hear their young child choking on a piece of food, or worse...a foreign object.
Suffocation is the leading cause of unintentional injury deaths for children under age one, and the fourth leading cause for children ages one through four years.  Most choking incidents in younger children involve food.

Children have small airwaves which are easily blocked.  A young child's trachea windpipe is approximately the size of a drinking straw.

I invented the BabyNoChoke after watching our oldest child, Hoffman, choke on pieces of food regularly.  Regardless of the number of times we told him to chew more, take smaller bites, or slow down, he would, from time to time breathe in his food, or try to swallow too fast.  After a particular scare, I went to the local home improvement store to fashion an object extractor for the mouth.  It took me many iterations to fine-tune what I imagined, and actually get a working model!

We were very lucky, because in late 2006, with a working version of the product nearby, our family was having dinner.
Vivian, aged 2 1/2, literally inhaled a piece of meat.  We all heard the familiar choking sound, hoping she would cough it up herself.  After several seconds, I got up to assist her.

Nothing would work...
As a last resort, I grabbed the BabyNoChoke from our safety ledge where we keep the fire extinguisher.  I immediately put the BabyNoChoke in her mouth, and extracted the piece of meat.  Vivian took the largest gasp I've ever heard, and started breathing (somewhat) normally.  We were all very scared, but so thankful we had the tool to assist Vivian.

We know that Vivian would not have survived the 10 minute wait for an ambulance.

That night turned from a tragic evening, back to a happy one.
